MYANMAR - IN THE MARKETS OF INLE LAKE

Myanmar is a storied land, rich in predominantly Buddhist and Hindu culture and traditions dating back thousands of years. Great lines of monks can be seen each morning walking the streets in cities and towns throughout the country, making their rounds with begging bowls and receiving everything they need from [all] members of the community, be it food, toiletries, household appliances, or even cash. The Myanmarese are a beautifully trusting, kind, and generous people. Traveling through this country one can feel emanations of the ancient, whether in the cities or remote countryside. Golden pagodas by the thousands rise up hundreds of feet into the air just about everywhere and some date back to as far as 2,500 years ago. There is an energy held in both the land and the people here that impacts one with a deep sense of calm, and seems to transport a visitor back in time to a simpler and slower age. In general, people utilize mobile devices far less than in other parts of Asia and many do not speak a word of English, even in the bustling southern city of Yangon. Modernity has only come recently to Myanmar, and to select parts of it at that. Many here live as they did hundreds of years ago and it is all too easy to drift into that as a traveler here.

Inle Lake is a 116 square kilometer freshwater lake located at 880 meters above sea level in Central Myanmar, in the Nyaungshwe Township. It is a relatively shallow lake with an average depth of 2.1 meters and is home to over 250 species of birds as well as a number of endemic species of fish and snails. The lake and its surrounding area are preserved by the state and it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The lake supports a thriving fishing industry for countless local fisherman who live in numerous villages and four small cities, both on the lake’s shores and on the lake itself. The region’s population of 70,000 is made up of primarily Intha, Shan, Taungyo, Pa-O, Danu, Kayah, Danaw, and Bamar ethnicities. Many of the region’s inhabitants live on the lake itself, in bamboo and wood homes built on stilts that rise up directly out of its waters. Entire villages, between 20 and 25 of them, are built up out of the lake’s waters on stilts and house everything from schools and monasteries to craft making workshops, grocery stores, restaurants, and bars. Fish makes up a large part of the local diet.

Transportation on the lake is done primarily by small canoe-like boats, some of them motor powered. Children play on small boats in their village neighborhoods, paddling after one another down watery lanes lined with wooden poles carrying power to homes where satellite dishes sit perched on rooftops above front porch gardens. It takes over an hour by motorized boat to get from the principal city of Nyaungshwe to where many of the villages are located to the south. Fishermen on the lake are abundant and have a unique style of rowing which sees them place one leg on the stern and one wrapped around the oar to maneuver through the lake’s shallow and partially reed-filled waters. Several thriving, colorful outdoor markets take place at different locations on the lake’s shores each week, typically five days out of seven. Goods bought and sold range from food, drink (both prepared as well as to take home for cooking), and spices to textiles, handicrafts, household appliances, and an assortment of pharmaceuticals. The farther south from Nyangshwe the markets take place, the fewer visitors from out of town. In general, the markets appear to exist for the locals themselves, with tourists making up a progressively larger number of the visitors each year as Inle Lake becomes more widely known.
