AN INTRODUCTION

COVID introduced a new and exciting aspect to The Humans Being Project (THBP). In a pre-pandemic world, the emphasis had been on exploring as many different cultures as possible, but the complications with travel that COVID introduced forced me to settle down in one place for an extended period. Choosing to return to my former hometown of Crested Butte, Colorado (USA), a tiny, extreme, and remarkable mountain community situated at 2,700 meters elevation in the Rocky Mountains, enabled me to connect deeply to my roots and also with the people of this remarkable place.

As a result, I was been inspired to create a project that celebrates 100 local women who have had a profound influence on Crested Butte, its culture, community, and lands. Diving deep into community in this way also provided the map for a potential new way to create imagery for The Humans Being Project. Where THBP has thus far presented a macro view that celebrates our sameness across cultures, new ‘subprojects’ may eventually provide a close-up view of extraordinary communities around the world.

Before creating portraits of a community’s members, I would take the time to live among residents and get to know them, listen to their stories, learn about their place’s history, and most importantly, hear from locals who they feel are most relevant to be photographed and why. Each subproject around the world will take between three and six months to research and shoot. Producing content ranging from books to short documentaries from each subproject may follow.
