Illustrating Our Sameness In Spite of Our Vast Differences

MYANMAR - YANGON I

Yangon is the largest city in Myanmar and was the capital of the country from 1948 to 2006. Its population is just shy of 4.5 million, which is comparably tiny for an Asian capital city. Yangon exemplifies great diversity and in its streets one can find people from many religions, ethnicities, and various economic standings. The primary religions are Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism and the largest ethnic groups consist of Indians, South Asian Burmese, Chinese Burmese, Rakhine, and Karen peoples. Most of the population are of Burman descent and are referred to as the Bamar people. The city’s architecture is a curious mix of primarily decaying British colonial buildings, eight story concrete apartment blocks, sporadic new cheaply constructed modern buildings including hotels, and pagodas that date back to as early as the 13th century.

Yangon’s neighborhoods provide its rich flavors that call out with their scents, sounds, and colors to behold! Chinatown comes to life each night with glowing paper lanterns strewn across its main street for nearly a quarter of a mile. Nighttime markets echo with the sounds of commerce and conversation while street-side eateries serve up kebobs and giant beers. The scent of cooking is everywhere, mostly of meat and spices, and in some places there hangs a strong odor of raw fish. Car and scooter horns are heard quite infrequently for an Asian city, although pollution hangs heavily in the air as is so common in this part of the world. From Chinatown, India Town runs to the riverfront where vegetable market takes place by day adjacent to the docks. At the docks people clamber aboard carrier boats bound for a multitude of destinations on the Yangon River while hulking men haul goods on their backs from arriving boats to storehouses on shore. Across town people pray by the thousands at the famous Shwedagon Pagoda while businessmen meet for a posh lunch at the Strand Hotel. A monk puts away his cell phone as he crosses a busy downtown street and a bicycle taxi operator takes a nap before the busy nighttime rush. Young girls sell vegetables from a street cart and a millennial woman helps a tourist add credits to his Myanmar sim card. This is Yangon.

More and more electronics stores have appeared in recent years and while active device use does not appear widespread in public like in so many other developed parts of the world, the number of cell phone users in the country continues to increase.
