INDIA - VILLAGE LIFE

DURING FESTIVAL TIME

PART I - MANPUR AND DIWALI

Life in the small villages of India are a world unto themselves. Families live in simple homes they’ve often build themselves and many cook on open fires in earthen floor kitchens. Others cook with propane gas in slightly more modern accommodations. The location of a village means everything to its residents, as certain locations afford more abundant natural resources such as fertile farmland for farming, wood to forage for firewood and herbs to use in homemade remedies. In Manpur Village in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas, residents plant lentils in the terraces that rise up the mountainsides above the fertile valley below. A small tributary of the Ganges River flows through the valley less than 70 kilometers from its source at the Gangotri Glacier. People in the villages have few possessions and often very little money, and yet they treat their guests like God has come to visit, as this is an Indian tradition, and one that people embody completely. Most people I meet have never seen a westerner before and jump at the chance to serve me tea or a meal in their simple home. With the families I am fortunate enough to live with for nearly a week, I can barely make a move without an inquiry into my well-being, ‘Am I well, am I hungry, thirsty, would I like tea or something to eat, or anything at all…?’ Requests are backed up with action and I eat and drink very well during my time here in the villages where I am treated like a king, or well, a God.

During the months of October to November, people across India celebrate the Hindu, Sikh, and Jain Festival of Lights known as Diwali. The festival symbolizes “the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.” In addition to buildings being decorated with countless strands of colorful lights, it’s customary to light off massive amounts of fireworks on the festival’s principal night. In villages with an abundance of trees and forest in their myst, this can mean that small fires sometimes erupt into the night. In Manpur, none of the fires have ever amounted to any damage and children jump up and down excitedly as they light bottle rocket after bottle rocket (and an assortment of other fireworks) late into the night, pulling from large piles brought home by older siblings (who also join in) and parents. Men drink locally made wine and sometimes liquor, and all rejoice in celebration.

Guru moved away from Manpur at age 16 to find restaurant work in the heavily touristed town of Rishikesh, where he learned English and sends money home to his family regularly.
